The Festival

The history of Festival Sinsal begins twelve years ago and it is characterized by an audio identity that escapes from the usual labels in the current music scene.

The Festival Sinsal was born in Vigo in 2003. Since then, more than 300 concerts have been organized establishing a programming model currently imitated by other events.

For the last four years, the Sinsal Festival at the island of San Simón has stood out an one of the most beautiful and special festivals in the year. During daylight, all over the island, from noon to twilight, artist from all over the world get together to perform their music to children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly in a unique, never-before-seen experience in Spain. [+]

The experience

Sinsal Son Estrella Galicia is not just a music festival; it is a unique event. The fact that the island can only be reached by boat and that the attendants have to discover themselves the secret of the bands playing at a Place of Cultural Interest turns the event a unique experience.

San Simón oozes history, when walking along its paths, you will feel the past beneath your feet. A monastery, an isolation hospital and a prison during the Spanish Civil War and the first post-war period, the island of San Simón is currently a living, open memory space.

The three main stages of Sinsal Son Estrella Galicia, the Músicas Escondidas the audience has to find, and many other activities will encourage the participants to discover all the magic corners of the island. Let yourself get carried away by the magic of Sinsal Son Estrella Galicia and discover all the secrets of San Simón.

The activities

Following the tradition of the previous festivals, there will be different activities apart from the performances, such as Músicas Escondidas or other activities focused to children.

FRIDAY 25th

shade

Throwing Shade

Based in London, where she is a DJ at the popular NTS Radio, Throwing Shade combines his radio facet specialized on field recordings and sounds of the world with her presence in projects of traditional music from Bali and Java.

This year 2014, her debut EP 19 Jewels released by the prestigious label No Pain In Pop -Grimes, Nite Jewel-, caught the attention of some specialized media such as The Guardian, which places it among the new names to follow.

Throwing Shade‘s music has been described as if the organic electronics by James Ferraro or Oneohtrix Point Never embraced the dowtempo and R & B.

frikstailers

Friskstailers

An argentinian couple based in Mexico, is one of the most prominent groups in this Latin American independent scene. This duo has crept into the international electronic music circuit with a combination of rhythms of his native Argentina with trends such as hip-hop, funk and electro.

Among their most notable awards are being released by DFA Records with his remix for The Crystal Ark, as well as collaborating with official remixes for Amadou & Mariam or Gotan Project.

jagwa

Jagwa Music

They represent the Mchiriku style, a sound based on percussion that was born 20 years ago in the slums of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). They are street musicians, with barely more than a Casio keyboard and homemade instruments, they have achieved a remarkable reputation in the few Tanzanian cultural circuits in which the singer is a celebrity. Jagwa rhymes can be read in the colorful decorations of dala dala, the buses that fill the endless and noisy traffic of Dar.

osoleone

Oso Leone

The Mallorcan group has been last year revelation with its exciting second LP Mokragora, an album that has been leading much of the national lists of best albums.

With an excellent review, the album has not gone unnoticed by some of the most important festivals and from Sinsal SON Estrella Galicia, the band seemed perfect to us to flow with the waves of San Simón. Minimalist Rock, sailor folk and many electronic landscapes that surrounds all environments the band creates.

Xenia Rubinos

This artist from Brooklyn, who has Cuban and Puerto Rican blood running through her veins, is one of the essential voices who positioned Latin music among the new leading music in the 21st century. Although her style follows urban traditions, ranging from Caribbean jazz to New Yorker rock, she has always been a Juana Molina’s fan. In these years, since she released her album entitled Magic Trix (2012/2013), she has heard comparisons such as she is some kind of R&B Latin Björk. Some people place her as a Talking Heads’ style inheritor in the “byrnian” pop stream that currently is led by Tune-Yards, Dirty Projectors and St. Vincent among others.

SATURDAY 26th + SUNDAY 27th

secreto

Secret line-up

As usual, the line-up on Saturday and Sunday is secret. Names like Alt-J, Nite Jewel, Alela Diane, Gravenhurst, Triángulo de Amor Bizarro or Laetitia Velma played at San Simón in previous editions of the festival.

To discover the secret line-up you will have to live the experience of Sinsal SON Estrella Galicia.

HIDDEN CONCERTS – Saturday 26th

whygo

Apenino is the project of Marco Maril, a Galician musician well known in the Pop scene for being part of Dar Ful Ful. This time, the artist from Santiago is not only introducing his new compositions, it is also the protagonist of the official song of the festival which will be released in a very special format.

Why Go is another Galician band that just released their album in 2014, Kara. The Vigo quintet is one of the most unique formations of the independent scene with his proposal between the Jazz and Pop, but above all, raising a contemporary review, with a troubadour mode, that dissociates them from the rest.

HIDDEN CONCERTS – Sunday 27th

trilitrate

Trilitrate are a trio, also from Vigo, with a surprising sonority between folk, post-rock and classical music. Another of the great revelations of the past 2013 and one more name to incorporate to the momentum of Galician music.

Caspervek Trio. From one of the surprises of the past 2013 to one that may be a surprise of 2014. Trio of students from the Conservatory of Music of Vigo with a special talent for integrating popular and classical music with film and sound.

postal-cuadrada

Musical postcard of Sinsal SON Estrella Galicia

If the big sports events have their own official soundtrack, why a cultural festival, where music is the main character, would be less? Sinsal SON Estrella Galicia presents its official song written by Marco Maril –Apenino– with sounds recorded at the island of de San Simón and the collaboration of Mónica Vacas –Mus– at voices. You can hear the song, titled Postal Illa using the player below and it will be released in a very special format, a musical postcard which may be purchased during the festival.
